Ineos pumps the brakes on its first EV

Ineos Automotive has delayed the launch of its upcoming Fusilier electric SUV due to cooling consumer demand for electric vehicles and industry uncertainty.

Revealed in February and originally planned for a 2027 introduction, the Fusilier was set to slot in as the smallest offering in the Ineos range, which consists of the Grenadier SUV and Grenadier Quartermaster ute.

It was also set to be the first electric-only Ineos model, with an EV available alongside a range-extender model featuring an unspecified combustion engine.

“We are delaying the launch of the Ineos Fusilier for two reasons: reluctant consumer uptake of EVs, and industry uncertainty around tariffs, timings and taxation,” Ineos said in a statement.

“Charging infrastructure for EVs in most markets continues to grow and consumer confidence will match that.

“But for the industry to meet net-zero targets there needs to be long-term clarity from policy-makers and a number of technology options available considering factors like raw materials, infrastructure and affordability.”

The brand didn’t include an updated launch timeline in the statement.

The UK Labour Party had said before today’s election that it planned to reinstate a 2030 ban on the sale of new combustion-powered vehicles, and it’s now set to take government.

Meanwhile, a European ban is still set for 2035, but could end up being relaxed further, while the outcome of the U.S. presidential election in November could impact the continued uptake of EVs in that country.

As with Ineos’ other model names, Fusilier is a military term – specifically, it’s a member of any of several British army regiments formerly armed with fusils, a type of musket.

The Fusilier also shares boxy design language with the Grenadier, despite riding on a bespoke skateboard platform with a steel “top hat” and underbody, and aluminium doors and closures.

It’s being developed with automotive supplier Magna, with the company promising “world-class off-road capability”.
